Out of the 50 Eagle Scouts in the Prairielands BSA Council in 2012, ten of the high achievers served on the Camp Robert Drake staff during their tenure in Scouting. The latest award has been earned by
Joe Umphenour of Troop 319 in Danville, who worked in the kitchen during the 80th anniversary season of Camp Drake. Eagle Scouts are celebrating their own anniversary as 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the first Eagle Scout in 1912. During this 100th anniversary year of Eagle Scouts, a special badge is awarded only to those Scouts who reach the pinnacle of the BSA this calendar year. Additional Eagle Scouts with past Camp Drake staff experience include:
Austin Anderson, Troop 319 in Danville
Mitchell Brauer,
Troop 6 in Urbana
Jeff Broch, Troop 95 in Tuscola
Evan Brown, Troop 121 in Champaign
Willie Campbell, Troop 40 in St. Joseph
Adam Crutchley, Troop 50 in Villa Grove
Bryant Deer, Troop 30 in Rantoul
Holt Hafer, Troop 103 in Mahomet
Ryan Rodgers, Troop 490 in Monticello

With the arrival of 2013, the start of the next 100 years of Eagle Scouts begins. One of the major highlights of the year will be the National Scout Jamboree in July. At the National Eagle Scout Association exhibit, Jim Schmitz, a master woodcarver, will lead Scouts in the carving of the NESA pole. The majestic carving—35 feet long and three feet in diameter—will tell the story of Eagle Scouts in wood. All Scouts who help carve will leave the jamboree with some shavings they removed and a certificate that they contributed. Then after the jamboree, when the NESA pole has been painted and mounted upright in a prominent location at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, a webcam will go live in the eagle’s eye at the top. Scouts visiting the Summit will be able to stand in front of it, call home, and give Mom and Dad the link to a website where they can see their Scout waving at them from the mountains of West Virginia.
NOTE: THE EAGLE SCOUT BANQUET IS ON FEB. 16th.
